CRIME OF THE WEEK – FEBRUARY 27, 2023 – Fraud

(CITY OF GUELPH) Earlier this month a senior citizen fell victim to a grandparent-type fraud and lost a total of $20,000. The victim was contacted by someone pretending to be their nephew who said he had been in a collision and was facing charges, and needed money for bail.

A male claiming to be an employee of the court system attended the victim’s residence and collected the cash. The following day the victim received a second call asking for more money to cover costs for medical expenses of the person who was allegedly injured in the collision. Once again the victim paid out, but to a different person who came to collect.

The first suspect is described as male, possibly East Indian, 5’6” tall, black hair in a ponytail, thin build, wearing dark clothing. The second suspect is described as male, white, 5’8” tall, stocky build, short brown hair and wearing light clothing.
