CRIME OF THE WEEK – SEPTEMBER 30, 2024 – Fraud

(CITY OF GUELPH) There have been four incidents of fraud involving a possible fake taxi in the City of Guelph, between Friday September 6th through Sunday September 8th 2024.

The incidents took place outside of businesses located on Woodlawn Road West and Stone Road West. In each case the victim was approached by a child asking if they could pay the child’s taxi fare by debit in exchange for cash from the child, because the cabbie would not accept cash. In all cases the victim complied and unbeknownst to the victim were handed back a card that was not theirs. In three of the four cases the victim had been defrauded.

The suspect vehicle is described as a white Audi with an orange and white taxi sign on the roof. The driver is described as male with brown skin, in his 20’s, with a slim build, possibly with a beard and wearing a mask. The child is described as male, between 11-14 years of age, possibly white, dark hair, and wearing a blue shirt, grey and white shorts, and black and red shoes.
